Plot

Under The Oak Tree follows a young boy named Tarou Tsubaki. Tarou’s mother is a single parent, and she works hard to make ends meet. When she can no longer afford housing in Tokyo, they move back to her childhood home of Nagano. She moves in with her brother Haruo Tsubaki, but he and his wife Sayuri do not welcome them warmly into their home.

Key Themes

Under The Oak Tree Manga holds within it themes of exploration, self-discovery, and acceptance. A child’s life is filled with uncertainty at every turn and often times children are forced to deal with changing their surroundings. This struggle is what causes Saki’s father to leave him alone in a different land. An important lesson that Saki learns while living under his tree is how important it is for us all to keep moving forward and that sometimes we need help getting there.
